Sunday, 26 July to Saturday, 1 August 2009
course tutor: David Beard MA
Pilgrimage was an important aspect of medieval life, and the numbers of pilgrims visiting major shrines in England rose dramatically during the medieval period. People went on pilgrimage to cure illness, to seek salvation or to fulfil a sacred oath. This course will look at the origins of pilgrimage, the major shrines and relics in England and what we know of the pilgrims themselves.
